When Parrish Hultquist started playing out at age 15, Utah had no idea what they were in store for.
After first tracking at Bonneville Studios for a band called Equinox, he developed his songwriting with Adrian Scott and Brad Hardisty in Roxx. Within a few short years, he was out performing originals with Moviescreen who released their first album in 1984.
By the time Moviescreen started playing at The Generation Gap, Parrish’s lightning speed and interesting chord changes set him apart from what was available at the time in Utah. Parrish was learning from just about every imaginable influence from early Ritchie Blackmore, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads to even Jazz artists like Al Di Meola and Allan Holdsworth. If he heard it, he could play it.
During the early 80’s he challenged himself to study classical nylon guitar only to find out that his teacher from the University of Utah had taught him everything he knew in six months. Anything that he would challenge himself to do on the guitar he could accomplish. He was a guitarists’ guitarist.
Parrish excelled in his abilities and quickly became bored or disinterested if the band he was in was not up to pushing as fast as things should be, reached a plateau or could not see his vision. Most of the time Parrish was the only guitarist in the band, but, those that were fortunate enough to share the stage with him found it to be an exhilarating experience.
Parrish took guitar seriously and was not up for sharing the stage with somebody he would consider subpar. Probably, the most successful band that Parrish performed with was Megattack with the dual guitar attack of Parrish Hultquist and Jay Gough. They played regional shows from Salt Lake City to Boise, Idaho with crowds of a 1000 or more. Megattack’s first album Raw Delivery took off in Europe just as the band broke up.
Parrish played in numerous projects in the late 80’s, such as Terra’s album Flames of Passion (out of print) featuring brothers Dana and Kevin Freebairn and early 90’s, most notably Wolfgang who played regularly in Salt Lake City and played tour dates opening for bands such as Extreme and Tesla. Wolfgang recorded several unreleased tracks and a few videos that can be found on YouTube nowadays.

Parrish created a lot of buzz as a guitarist and garnered compliments from other contemporaries such as Michael Schenker and George Lynch. He started to appear on Metal Fanzine covers as the next big thing or the Intermountain Music Scene secret weapon. It would be a fact that Parrish would not have a problem tangling with any guitarist on stage doing anything from Metal to Jazz to Classical Music. He was an accomplished musician who studied everything he could get his hands on.
Parrish began to have medical issues, a very rare seizure problem in the mid 90’s that began to slow down his ability to perform. He took whatever energy he did have to creating demos off all of his song ideas in his home studio and took opportunities to record with friends.
In 2005, the opportunity came to record with the original Megattack line up and a follow up to Raw Delivery called Save The Nations was recorded. The album was professionally mastered at Airshow in Colorado. Parrish put as much as he could into his songwriting and playing. He was constantly dealing with seizures although he was grateful to have the opportunity to record again and perform on stage in Salt Lake City. Although medical issues would keep him in Spokane, W A., where his family lived and where he had medical attention, he was grateful to perform saying finally his daughter, Taylor, was able to see him perform with the band that garnered so much success in the 80’s.
One time he was riffing away at a visit to Guitar Center in West Valley later in years when a Salesman was blown away and asked if he had ever heard of Parrish Hultquist, that his Dad use to hang with him and he was considered the best guitarist to ever come out of Salt Lake City. He finally busted up a little and explained that he was Parrish.
If Parrish respected you as a musician or as a person he was a lifelong friend. While he had a hard time with people that were not what he considered real, judgmental or dishonest he was ready to include those that he could tell were on the fringes whether they were shy, handicapped or otherwise feeling left out. He had a sense of humor and a personality that would light up the room or the face of a girl working as a Checker at the Grocery store. If he wanted to engage you in conversation or merriment there was no stopping him.
Parrish never made the natural choice to go out to the LA scene in the 80’s. He loved Utah, Idaho and Washington State. He never wanted to be too far from family. He was the oldest brother of eight children. The last several years with his health problems he was never far from his sisters and his Parents in Spokane, Washington.
Parrish was preceded in death by his younger brother, Shawn Hultquist, who had heart problems and while waiting for a heart donor died in 1998. His mother Gay Lynn Saunders also passed away a few years ago. The surviving family, his father Ron, Stepmother Jacque, Travis, Rome, Shelly, Stacy, Ronnie, Tracy as well as Cory and Billy are gathering for a Memorial in Spokane, Washington over the next few days. His engaging personality and talent will be sorely missed but warmly remembered.

Parrish was passionate about everything in life, I know there will be a lot of people that will miss him, I am one of them. I have not seen Parrish in along time, and I miss all of the times that we spent together as room mates and friends. The last time that I spoke to Parrish was about 4 years ago, he was here in Utah. I just can’t believe that he is gone!! I Love you Parrish!!! R.I.P
I remember the first time I saw Parrish perform back in the early 80’s. What an incredible performer! I was singing in a local Salt Lake band called ‘Obsession’, at the time… And the boys and I would go down to the Generation Gap there on State Street, to watch live music. When Moviescreen first hit the stage, I remember having to scrape my jaw up off the floor! Between Parrish Hultquist’s excellent guitar playing, to Dana’s soaring vocals; it was truly an incredible experience. Years later, the lead guitarist from my group Obsession, (Jay Gough) would go on to join with Parrish and Rick Jackson to form Megatttak. One of the best metal outfits in the entire region. I was truly saddened to hear the news about Parrish; he was incredibly talented, and one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. Rest in peace, brother…you will be missed.
We are also planning a Memorial for Parrish here in Salt Lake City. Details coming soon. We Love You Parrish
This is amazing…and wow, he was the greatest man and friend that I have ever known. I will truly miss Parrish. Being able to speak with him weekly for the past 13 months has been a treasure that I will not forget. I never imagined that I would not see him again, but I have the wonderful 1 and 2 hour conversations that we would have….I love you Parrish. You mean the world to me…R.I.P. to a true and wonderful friend an amazing talent, and one of the greatest men I have ever known. The pleasure was truly mine.
Parrish was my oldest brother, growing up I was always so proud to tell people about his music and how ridiculously good he was playing the guitar.
I never knew Parrish to get angry or negative, he was truly one of the nicest guys I know. The family loves you Parrish, we already miss you like crazy.
Heaven now has another of the greatest guitar players ever, gone before his time. I love you my brother, never forget you.
A real guitar hero.. you were always a great friend to the freebairn boy’s. Rock on !:)
I am still in shock & disbelief that Parrish is no longer with us! It doesn’t seem real. Parrish always gave me shit but was one of the sweetest guys you would ever know! I hope you are at peace Parrish & its comforting knowing you are not in any more pain!
Rock the Heavens LOUND & HARD HUN!!!
xxooxxoo
I got the opportunity to jam a couple of times with Parrish back in the 80’s and realized then what so many other came to realize is that he was an amazing guitar talent and a great individual as well.
I cannot believe he is gone and can only hope that his family and friends find peace in knowing that he is resting eternally in the arms of our Heavenly Father and will allways be remembered of fondly.
God’s Speed to you Parrish, May You Finally Rest In Peace.

Head.
A great guitar player indeed.he will certainly be missed
I remember seeing him over 30 years ago in a music store in West Valley City. He was playing all of this tapping and harmonics stuff….and my friend Vince and I were just blown away. He took requests and sat there and just played whatever we threw at him. You could tell that his heart and soul was in his guitar playing, and it was so cool that he would take the time to indulge a couple of wide eyed awkward teenagers. I can definitely vouch for the nice things said about him just from that one experience. RIP.
God Bless you Parrish, your presence on earth will forever be remembered. I can’t believe that you were so close to me for so many years. I wish I would have known, so that I could have been a better friend to you. You Sir, were always – in its truest form – a free spirit…
parrish you will be missed by many. thanks for sharing your music with us for so many years. and thanks for rocken us all out in draper & sandy ut . when we had our huge barn parties . see you on the other side.
Parrish,
Congratulations on being chosen as the newest member of Dio. Other members include: Randy Rhoads (guitar) Cozy Powell (drums) Cliff Burton (bass).
Is it true that Randy is turning over the solo to you on “Over the mountain”?
I first met Parrish back in 79. We were both 17, had long hair, and played guitar. He blew me and everyone away! Since then, he has inspired me and hundreds of guitar players throughout the Wasatch Front.
L.A you had Randy, Seattle Jimi, we’re proud to say that here in SLC, we lay claim to Parrish.
Parrish,

Hultquist Family,
I’m so sorry about your loss’s. Shawn was a really good friend of mine and I was shocked to see him go and not able to attend his funeral. Now Parrish!
I have so many good times to remember in my life that include the Hultquist family one way or another. You truly have a lot to be proud of! Parrish and Shawn have left behind some good memorable times, that will last forever in a lot of peoples lives. Some say, “only the good die young”. So from all of the Morrison family, God Bless! Rest In Peace Parrish!
Thank you for the kind words . We miss Shawn every day of our lives and now we will miss Parrish but they are all together and no more pain and sufffering. Thankk you from all of us. You can always contact us Thank you
I’ll never forget the first time I saw Parrish, he walked by and I couldn’t help but say Whoa! He stopped, turned around and smiled at me, that was 25 yrs ago; What a Beautiful Man. I remember Parrish and Shawn together they were the most handsome men I have ever known. Shawn’s passing was truly heart-breaking.
I became close to Parrish through the years and kept in touch even when we both moved away from Utah. He wrote last time we connected that he was proud of me for following my dream, he even remembered what it was. I know he felt he didn’t get to accomplish his, but I believe he lived his dreams everyday of his life. He was not only amazingly gifted, but charmed and cherished and so loved.
I deeply miss my dear sweet and funny friend, Parrish really made me laugh and feel very loved, my cup run’th over.
Till we meet again and in my dreams*
Parrish I Love You
Yvonne~
WOW!!!! Bryan Sorenson blew my mind today when he visited me at the clinic I work at and told me about Parrish! I didn’t know and was pretty stunned. ;-< Sooo many memories from times past.
Parrish was one of those friends who I might not see for some time, even years, but when we would meet again, we would always pick-up where we left off. As with many of the good people above who commented, I doubt any of us could adequately describe, even the tip-of-the-iceberg of his charismatic life. Few people are blessed with the tremendous amount of natural talent Parrish had. I was also stunned at times, by his sheer intelligence and his depth of character. He wasn't just another pretty face, for certain!
Back when Moviescreen played the "Gap," I played on, or near some of the same days in the band I was in at the time. I booked Parrish countless times at Rafters and remember when Terry and I sent him to Hawaii with Bryan Sorenson and Jeff and the 'gang' — BTW, whatever happened to Bryan's drums over there??
Anyway, Parrish and I had a few interesting philosophical discussions regarding life in this, and the next world. I guess he's one-up on me, now that he's graduated!! To Travis and the rest of Parrish's family, my sincere regards. Parrish's passing is a terrible loss, especially to you, and also to those of us who were fortunate enough to know him in this world.
Bryan, keep in touch dammit! I'm not quite ready to read your Obit yet, my friend. Besides, I still have your drum-solo from Rafters on the night you won (of course) the drum contest there, and you can't have it until you're 80. Parrish didn't bring you back from the brink-of-death for nothing, you know.
I guess I'll have to go unpack my Psychology book and try to review the Stages of Grieving, again. Like that'll fill the hole….not!
parrish was my stepdad for many years married to my mom linaee ! he was a funny guy he would aways write me emails just to make me laugh. my memories of him are in our home him always playing guitar for my mom! my mom says he was the love of her life she is having a really hard time as is my sister taylor who parrish considered his!! she loves him very much!! he will be greatly missed!!
Megan, do you remember me? You were just a little girl when I last saw you. Like your mom, I too was once married to Parrish and later became his friend… a much better place for the two of us to be in. I remember when Par met your mom and when Taylor was born. Every time he’d come visit me he would rave about his little Taylor. He loved her so much! give your mom and your grandma Guynell my love and best wishes. It’s been a long time. I hear you are what? 22? Very hard to believe.
Parrish touched so many lives! I’m grateful for all the joy, laughter, tears, and lessons he left in mine. Despite how much he will be missed, I’m glad he can finally be at peace and pick up that guitar again.
best wishes and love to you,
Kindra
Megan thanks for stopping by. You really captured his personality and he really loved you girls. He used to talk about you both.
kindra yes i do remember a little bit. i remember playing with the little girl who lived above you! i will tell my mom and taylor you send them your best wishes…its a sad thing but hes in a better place and no longer suffering. my mom should be there on saturday are you going?? 22? ha not quite almost twenty still though time flys little taylor turns sixteen this year. i remember when my mom first got with parrish it seems like yesterday.. where does time go? it was good to hear from you!!
I’m sorry that I won’t be able to be there on Saturday as I will be out of the state. I was however able to visit the Hultquist family in Spokane right after it happened and that is where I feel it’s most important to honor Par. Please have your mom get a hold of me. I would love to meet up with you, her, and Taylor.
Parrish may god bless you and keep shredding in heaven. Thanks for the teachings and jamming at bruce wilsons house. You are and will always be a great inspiration to me… ex-lead guitarist of terra
Parrish,
My friend, my husband, my soul mate. Please forgive me for all the things left unsaid. I always believed in time we would mend our ways and find our way back to each other.
You were my greatest mentor and I attribute the artist I have become from watching you. . .
I know you still love me, I feel it, we shared something nobody else can truly understand. The important thing is – that we do. I am So Sorry for all the hurt and pain that we’ve been through and that pride kept us apart. I have never known a love greater than you, nor do I believe it exists. I want to thank you from the center of my heart and soul, for coming to see me. I needed that. And your right, you’re with our son. I have not felt that much happiness from you except the day Taylor was born. You live on in her. I see the artistry flow from her like it did from you. You wait and see if she doesn’t match you musically. I recently saw the movie August Rush, and wow if that isn’t us baby I don’t know what is. Taylor is our August, and that little girl is going to accomplish amazing things.
I am so sorry you’re gone, but I am more grateful you’re no longer in pain. I love you Parrish Lee Hultquist, you have been the love of my life, and until we meet again – I’ll watch over our daughter and you watch over our son.
“Love is stronger than death, even though it can’t stop it from happening.
But no matter how hard death tries to separate us it cannot touch our memories”
I Love You,
Linaee Hultquist
I remember the first time I met Parrish. We had been invited to a party at the Midvale storage units where Terra was playing. Everybody was having a good time and then there was this energy that erupted “Their here” is echoing around the room. This orange bronco pulls up and then it was like lightning struck. Flocks of Salt Lake City’s most beautiful girls charged this bronco like bulls. Out stepped the 3 most gorgeous men I had ever seen. Parrish, Shawn and Travis and those three divided and conquered the room. It was incredible. I remember Parrish was so sweet, he talked to every girl in the room that night. I had no doubt I was in the presence of greatness. Being in a room with Parrish wasn’t an experience it was an EVENT. You will always be remembered as a legend!!!
Hello Brad,
Jeff Fultz here. We met im Birmingham when I was on tour.
I appreciate you taking the time to call and let me know about Parrish.
He was such an amazing musician. A true guitar hero.
My thoughts are with you brother. I know how much you love him.
Im not sure your number is the same but ill give it a try.
Jeff
Parrish impacted many lives, mine was one of them. We knew each other over 20 years….good times and bad, traveling all over to try and find someone to make him well. I cherish all those times and can’t help but smile at all the fun. Being the big he was at heart, he stole the hearts of many children, including my daughter Darian. When she was 8 he would crawl through cardboard tunnels with her that made their way through our house, at 12 he set her up in the studio to sing and now at 19 she relishes the music they shared while playing guitar together. Thank you for all the memories Par, we will always miss you. Rest in peace my friend
It’s so sad to lose my friend. Although separated by years and miles, memories of Parrish will stay with me forever. Parrish was a rippin’ great rocker, but the music we wrote together was sweet and soulful. I’ll never forget when we played during Sunday services with my sister, Lolly, singing music that we wrote about God. Parrish brought the congregation to it’s feet! And the song we put together for my wedding was masterful and truly conveyed my feelings for my wife, Patty. Then just goofing around making up stupid, goofy songs with Par and Brad, laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe! I’m so blessed to have had Par for a friend, we had SOME FUN!!! I Love You, Bro.
Rest in Peace Parrish my dear friend ! Your skills and Personality and Loyalty as a Friend will be Remembered forever! My best to your family!
I just found out today that my dear friend Parrish past away. I moved from Utah to Wa. And lived only 2 hours away from Spokane. I had talked to Parrish and we were supposed to meet up yet never had the chance. He was an amazing man and always made me smile. He was the best friend a girl could have. I met him through Linaee and man I was envious of the love they had for one another. I am searching for my best friend Linaee and found this. I am devastated that I never took the time to see him again. I had no clue he was ill and he gave no signs. He would only make me laugh. Linaee, if your out there and if you read this, I love you and Megan and Taylor and want you in my life. Your the best friend I have ever had. Please if anyone knows how I can find Linaee and get a hold of her please email me at mamberoo32@yahoo.com. also, I need to know where Parrish memorial is, I would like to pay him that visit that I promised. I love you my sweet friend Parrish. May the angels walk with you. I will never forget the song you wrote for me and I will play it often. Play on rocker boy.

I remember Parrish from the 80’s. So long ago… I remember watching him play at a bar called the touch of class. Of course i had a fake I.D.! He would always take the time to come over and say hi. So many years ago and so many memories. What an incredible talent that can never can be replaced! Wish I could have been able to kick it with you for awhile and talk about old times before God called you home. You will be truly missed but never forgotten.
I only met Parrish a few times back in the moviescreen days, I will never forget hearing him play. He was such an inspiration for me. Sorry to hear of his passing, I have been out of the band circles for a while now.

Perhaps one of the greatest bands to ever not get noticed in the metal scene, had Raw Delivery had the push and pull of a major label release, I believe it would have been HUGE!! to say the least, hopefully we can get it heard now?
I miss Partish he was an incredible friend and guitarist and poet
His painting were beautiful. Anything Parrish did was in great detail and with passion for all he shares with us all
He is always with us.
Lovingly Violet~
It’s so wonderful to hear of the impact my brother had on people. He was one of the great ones, we named our son Liam Parrish, in honor of him.
I totally agree. Raw Delivery was released by Dream Records in France and received a lot of buzz and press, but, the band imploded before they could take advantage of playing some Metal Festivals and some shows in key markets. The opportunity was lost at that time. They did regroup in 2005 and recorded Save The Nations with 4 of 5 original members including Parrish Hultquist and played two shows before health issues and internal problems persisted before imploding again.
